My Microsoft Ignite week is just about to start, and I’m SO excited! I’ve been looking forward to this week since last year, and it’s finally here, yay :)
Since this is such a huge, special event, I try to make the most of it. And funnily enough, that means… Attending fewer sessions! Yep, that’s right. It sounds a little strange for a conference, I know. But to me, the biggest value comes from meeting other people, and maybe even help someone else. So while I have a few sessions on my must-see list, my schedule is packed with other fun things:
I’m presenting two sessions this year, so they are obviously on my list of things to do ;) You can read about my sessions in my previous blog post Speaking (Twice!)
Live Streams and Recordings
If you can’t make it to Microsoft Ignite this year, don’t worry! You can live stream all the sessions from September 24-28th, or watch the recordings on-demand from September 25th.
Group Idea Swaps and Mentoring
In addition to presenting two technical sessions, I will be leading two Group Idea Swaps and Mentoring sessions. Each group consists of only 8-10 attendees, so it will be much more like a conversation than a presentation. I’m really looking forward to this! I love how Microsoft has added this to focus more on interaction and personal connections this year :)
My two Group Idea Swaps are:
Your Turn! Getting Started as a Technical Speaker
You are the only person in the world who can share your story and you experiences. Are you ready to take the next step and start presenting to help and teach others? In this group session, we will discuss how to get started as a technical speaker, including how to pick a topic, writing abstracts, starting with a storyboard, building engaging slide decks, rehearsing demos, and finally some tips for the actual delivery and how to calm your nerves. Let’s do this together!
Metadata-Driven Data Warehouse Automation with Biml
Is it possible to fully automate a Data Warehouse solution from metadata? It sure is! The question is, should you? For simple, standard Data Warehouses, you may be able to automate everything with minimal effort. But if you have complex patterns and logic, it might be better to automate the boring 80% and manually build the last 20%. In this group session, we will discuss Business Intelligence Markup Language (Biml), a powerful tool for automating Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence solutions. We will go through an example metadata model, and share our experiences with building automated solutions.
1:1 Idea Swaps and Mentoring
If you’re attending Microsoft Ignite and would like to sit down for a personal chat, please let me know! You can use the New Meeting tool or message me through MyIgnite, or just ping me on Twitter.
I’m especially interested in helping others get started speaking or volunteering, and I would love to get to know more amazing women in tech! Let’s chat about Data, SQL, SSIS, ADF, Biml, speaking, volunteering – or heck, I can chat about games and cats and coffee as well :D
Data + AI Community Social
Speaking of coffee! Please, please, please come join us at the Data + AI Community Social on Tuesday! There will be donuts and coffee! And not just any regular donuts or coffee. We’re talking VOODOO DONUTS and NITROGEN COLD BREW COFFEE! *drool*
I will be staffing a community booth there, so don’t be shy. Grab a snack and come chat! :D I’ll mainly be focusing on PASS, #SQLFamily and other community events. The amazing Melody Zacharias (@SQLMelody) will be staffing one of the other booths, and if you’re more on the AI side you can get to know Matt Wade (@thatmattwade).
Oh, and did I mention you might spot some celebrities? OoOoOo! :D Rohan Kumar (Corporate Vice President, Azure Data) and Eric Boyd (Corporate Vice President, AI Platform) will be there!
Day 1 Live Stream
Last year, I was a Microsoft Ignite Community Reporter, and I got to do all these really cool things, including the Day 1 Live Stream. Guess what… I get to be a part of it again! WOOT! :) I will be assisting this year’s amazing community reporters, Jen Stirrup (@jenstirrup) and Reza Rad (@Rad_Reza), on the ground.
I will also try to do a few more interviews this year. Last year I interviewed Mike Flasko about Azure Data Factory, and he agreed to do a follow-up interview this year! Yay! There are some really cool features coming up in Azure Data Factory, so I can’t wait to have a chat with him. I’ll be posting this interview, and any other interviews, on my YouTube channel, so please subscribe :D
Finally! The Microsoft Ignite Attendee Celebration. It’s back in Universal Studios Florida and Universal’s Islands of Adventure. This is like my dream come true. I’m a huge rollercoaster fan. THIS IS GOING TO BE AWESOME! :D
See you soon!
I will be tweeting a ton throughout the week, so please follow me @cathrinew. I will blog as often as I can. And, I hope to meet you in person! See you in Orlando :D
